The most spectacular coastal variant of the Camino de Santiago. Follow the Atlantic from Viana do Castelo, with white sandy beaches, wild cliffs and fishing villages that seem frozen in time.
If the Central Portuguese Way is the route of medieval cities and the Lusitanian interior, the coastal variant is the route of the senses: the roar of the Atlantic, the smell of sea salt, fine sand underfoot and the infinite horizon of the ocean the Romans called "the end of the world". This route winds between paradise beaches, protected dunes and cliffs plunging into the sea, passing through fishing villages that seem frozen in time.
The Portuguese Coastal Way starts in Viana do Castelo, an elegant city with a Roman and seafaring past, and heads north along the Atlantic coastline through estuaries, pine forests and white sandy beaches. The passage through Caminha and the border crossing at the mouth of the Miño are moments of exceptional beauty, very different from the urban crossing at Tui-Valença on the Central route.
Already in Galicia, the Coastal Route continues through A Guarda, Baiona and Vigo — a city with a lively marina and the best seafood in the world — before joining the Central route at Redondela for the final stretch to Santiago. It is physically more demanding than the Central Way — some coastal sections involve climbing and descending cliffs — but the scenery is priceless. At Easy Camino Santiago we plan every stage in detail for you.
13 stages with the Atlantic as the star, from Viana do Castelo to Santiago de Compostela.
Along the mouth of the River Lima. Departing from Viana do Castelo, with its impressive Santa Luzia basilica on the hillside, the stage follows the coastline through coastal pine forests and protected dunes. Caminha, at the mouth of the Miño facing Galicia, is a beautifully preserved fishing village.
Crossing the border by sea. The crossing of the River Miño from Caminha to A Guarda is made by ferry boat — one of the most unique experiences on the entire Camino — passing by the island of Ínsua with its castle and convent. A Guarda, at the foot of Monte Santa Tegra with its Celtic hillfort remains, welcomes you into Galicia.
The Galician coast begins. This is the most spectacular stage of the coastal route: cliffs above the sea, wild beaches such as Oia and views of the Cíes Islands. Baiona, where on 1 March 1493 the caravel Pinta arrived announcing the discovery of America, is one of the most beautiful destinations in Galicia.
The most beautiful stretch of the coastal route. From Baiona, the Camino passes through Vigo with its incomparable ría and legendary oysters, continues through Arcade and climbs to Pontevedra, considered by many pilgrims the most beautiful city on the Camino de Santiago. Its pedestrianised old town and lively squares are a perfect reward before the final stages.
