The French Way: the great adventure of your life

The French Way is the most famous and popular pilgrim route in the world. From the village of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the Pyrenees to the Cathedral of Santiago, this 780km route crosses unique landscapes, historic cities and villages unchanged for centuries. Crossing the Pyrenees on day one is an experience that stays with you forever.

Over its 33 official stages, the French Way passes through heritage gems such as Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos and León. The famous Castilian Meseta — feared and loved in equal measure — offers miles of silence and reflection. This is where many pilgrims say they found the peace they were seeking.

At Easy Camino Santiago we organise your complete French Way with dedication only those who have walked it can offer. We handle everything: nightly accommodation in private hostels, guesthouses or hotels, daily luggage transfer stage to stage, your pilgrim passport, and 24h phone support throughout. All you have to do is walk and enjoy. If you prefer a shorter format, we also organise the last 100km from Sarria.

French Way Itinerary

33 stages of pure emotion. Here we show you the most iconic sections.

1

St Jean Pied de Port → Roncesvalles

The mythical Pyrenees crossing. 25km of epic ascent via Col de Lepoeder or the Valcarlos route. Your first day as a pilgrim will greet you with views you will never forget.

25 km High difficulty Arrival: Roncesvalles
2

Pamplona → Logroño (Stages 4–6, ~90 km)

After Pamplona, the Way crosses La Rioja — land of wines and century-old wineries. The Alto del Perdón and the Irache vineyard (where pilgrims can drink free wine from a fountain) are must-stops.

~90 km (3 stages) Medium difficulty Arrival: Logroño
3

Burgos (Stages 11–12)

The most impressive Gothic cathedral on the Way. Burgos deserves at least half a free day to wander its historic quarter, taste local black pudding and visit the tomb of El Cid.

~40 km (2 stages) Medium difficulty City: Burgos
4

The Castilian Meseta (Stages 13–20)

The pilgrim's meditation. Endless kilometres of wheat and poppies beneath a vast sky. The Meseta divides pilgrims — some hate it, others consider it the heart of the Camino.

~200 km (8 stages) Low-medium difficulty Region: Castilla y León
5

León → O Cebreiro (Stages 21–28)

The climb into Galicia. From León — with its unique stained-glass cathedral — the Way ascends to O Cebreiro. Ponferrada with its Templar castle and the delicious local cuisine make this section very special.

~190 km (8 stages) Medium-high difficulty Arrival: O Cebreiro (Galicia)
6

Sarria → Santiago (Stages 29–33, 115 km)

The final Galician stretch. Eucalyptus trees and Galicia's fine rain mark the last five days. From Sarria — the minimum for the Compostela — the Way fills with life and pilgrims. Arriving in Santiago and the Plaza del Obradoiro is an indescribable feeling.

115 km (5 stages) Medium difficulty Arrival: Santiago de Compostela
