Finisterre: the end of the Camino that goes beyond the end

The most moving epilogue of any pilgrimage — the end of the world.

For centuries, the medieval pilgrims who arrived at Santiago de Compostela did not stop there. They kept walking for three more days westwards, until they reached Cape Finisterre — "Finis Terrae" in Latin, the end of the earth — where the European continent literally ends and the Atlantic Ocean begins. For them, this was the true end of the Camino: the point where there was no more land, only water and the most beautiful sunset in the world.

Today, the Way of Finisterre is one of the most special stretches for pilgrims who have arrived in Santiago. After the euphoria of the Praza do Obradoiro, these additional 87 kilometres offer a different transition: the Camino empties of pilgrims — ideal for those arriving from the Portuguese Way or the English Way — the landscapes become wilder and the pace slows. Through the stone villages of Galicia, between eucalyptus and pine trees, the route descends slowly towards the ocean.

The most powerful tradition of the Way of Finisterre is the burning of clothing on arriving at the lighthouse: boots, socks, a garment worn during the Camino. It is a purification ritual, of leaving behind the old and embracing the new. Watching the sunset from the Finisterre lighthouse — the km 0.00 of the Camino — as the sun sinks into the Atlantic is an experience you never forget. Some pilgrims add the extension to Muxía (+31km), another great Atlantic shrine of Jacobean devotion.

On arriving at Cape Finisterre you can obtain the Fisterrana, a specific certificate for this stretch, highly valued among pilgrims.

Stone hamlets, ancient hórreos, the Costa da Morte and the legendary km 0.00 lighthouse at Cape Finisterre.

Perfect after any Camino

The ideal continuation for pilgrims who have arrived in Santiago and want a few more days of walking before going home.

Completed in 3 days

Short and perfectly paced. Add it to any Jacobean route without extending your trip by more than 3 days.

Add the extension to Muxía (+31km, +€89) for the complete Atlantic experience and the Virxe da Barca shrine.

Way of Finisterre itinerary — 3 stages from Santiago

Three stages connect the holy city of Santiago with the lighthouse at the end of the world

1

Santiago de Compostela → Negreira

The departure from the holy city. The first day begins at the Cathedral and crosses the outskirts of Santiago along paths through pine and eucalyptus trees. Crossing the River Tambre over the Roman bridge, you arrive at Negreira, the first major stop before the coast.

2

Negreira → Olveiroa

The rural heart of Galicia. The longest and perhaps the most beautiful stage of the route. The path crosses a deep and authentic Galicia, with hamlets of four houses, ancient hórreos, stone cruceiros at every crossroads. Olveiroa, a tiny perfectly preserved medieval village, is the stop before the grand finale.

3

Olveiroa → Finisterre Lighthouse

The grand finale: the km 0.00 lighthouse. The last stage descends from Olveiroa through gorse and heather moorland to the town of Finisterre, with its fishing harbour and seafood restaurants. From the town, the final kilometre to the lighthouse is a short but emotion-filled climb. At the km 0.00 stone, the Camino ends. The Atlantic and the sunset await.

💡 Optional extension to Muxía: From Finisterre, one additional day of walking leads to Muxía (+31km), the other great Atlantic shrine on the Costa da Morte. Ask us about this extension — +€89 per person.
