The Camino de Santiago from Sarria is the most popular option for those who want to earn the Compostela in a short time. The short answer: the usual is to do it in 5 or 6 days. But it depends on your pace, your fitness level and how you want to experience the journey. If you're also preparing for the trip, it's worth checking our guide on what to pack in your Camino de Santiago backpack so you don't overload yourself.
How many kilometres is it from Sarria to Santiago?
From Sarria to Santiago it is just over 100 kilometres — exactly between 115 and 118 km depending on the variant chosen. This distance is the minimum required by the Cathedral of Santiago to award the official Compostela, which is precisely why Sarria became the most popular starting point on the Camino.
Stages of the Camino from Sarria: 5-day option

Stages of the Camino from Sarria: 6-day option (recommended)
This is the most recommended itinerary because it allows you to go at a more relaxed pace, enjoy the Galician landscape and arrive in Santiago without exhausting your legs. We split the longest stage (Portomarín–Palas de Rei) into two sections.

|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Sarria → Portomarín | 22 km | Medium |
| Day 2 | Portomarín → Ventas de Narón | 15 km | Easy |
| Day 3 | Ventas de Narón → Palas de Rei | 11 km | Easy |

Can it be done in fewer than 5 days?
Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. Doing it in 4 days means stages of more than 28 km per day, which can cause blisters, injuries and a level of fatigue that ruins the experience. The Camino is not a race: it's worth taking the time to enjoy it.
What about more than 6 days?
Of course. Many pilgrims add an extra night in a charming village, such as Melide (famous for its octopus) or Arzúa. It's also possible to add an initial stage in Lugo if you want to start the Camino from there. Tell us your preferences and we'll adapt the itinerary.
Tips for planning your Camino from Sarria well
- Book accommodation in advance, especially in high season (July–September). Popular albergues fill up quickly.
- Wear already broken-in footwear. New hiking boots or trail shoes are the number one cause of blisters.
- Stamp your pilgrim passport from day one — you need a minimum of 2 stamps per day to validate the Compostela.
- Start early each morning, before 8am, to avoid the heat and arrive comfortably at your accommodation.
- Bring rain gear. Galicia is green for a reason: it can rain at any time of year.
