With more than 10 official routes and hundreds of variants, choosing the right Camino de Santiago can be overwhelming. This guide helps you decide based on what matters most: your available time, your fitness level, what you're looking for, and your budget.
First things first: how much time do you have?
Available time is the most decisive factor. Here are your options based on how many days you can dedicate:
| Days available | Recommended route | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 5–7 days | Last 100 km from Sarria or English Way | 115–119 km |
| 10–14 days | Portuguese Camino or Portuguese Coastal Route | 240–260 km |
| 14–20 days | Camino Primitivo or Camino del Norte (section) | 320 km+ |
| 30–35 days | Full Camino Francés | 780 km |
Choose based on your profile
🥾 First Camino, no previous experience
The Camino from Sarria or the Portuguese Camino. Manageable difficulty, good infrastructure and well-organised stages. Many people have done it without prior experience and thoroughly enjoyed it.
🏃 Good fitness level, looking for a challenge
The Camino Primitivo or the Camino del Norte. Significant elevation changes, less infrastructure and fewer people. A more authentic and demanding experience.
🌊 I'm drawn to the sea and nature
The Portuguese Coastal Camino or the Camino del Norte. Stages alongside the Atlantic or Cantabrian Sea with spectacular scenery.
👫 Going as a couple or with family
The Portuguese Camino or the last 100 km from Sarria. Easy to adapt to different paces, good variety of accommodation and flexible stages.
🕊️ Looking for peace and quiet, fewer crowds
The English Way or the Camino Primitivo. Less busy, a more intimate atmosphere and the feeling of having the Camino to yourself.
🏛️ I'm interested in history and heritage
The Camino Francés or the Portuguese Camino. They pass through cities with cathedrals, museums and exceptional Jacobean heritage.
🚴 I prefer to go by bicycle
The Camino by Bicycle is a completely different experience. The Francés and the Portugués are the most popular for cycling. You need at least 200 km for the Compostela.
