The Camino de Santiago is an experience you can share as a couple, with friends, or as a family. But not all routes are equally suited to every situation. In this guide we explain which routes work best and how to make the most of it.
The Camino as a couple: a transformative experience
Walking for several days with your partner, without phones, without distractions, and sharing the effort is one of the most intense experiences you can have together. The Camino tests communication, patience, and mutual support — and most couples remember it as one of the most special moments of their relationship.

The Camino with family: yes, it's possible
Doing the Camino with children is perfectly possible if you choose the right route and adapt the stages. Children usually enjoy it far more than their parents expect — the Camino has something special that resonates with them.
Tips for the Camino with family
- Choose short stages: 12-15 km a day is enough for children under 10. From age 12-13 they can manage stages of 18-22 km.
- Book private accommodation: Bunk-bed hostels can be difficult for families. Guesthouses and rural hotels are more comfortable.
- Involve the children in the planning: Letting them carry their own small backpack and participate in getting credential stamps makes them feel part of the Camino.
- Prioritise food stops: The octopus in Melide, the cheese in Arzúa, churros in Santiago... Galician food is an extra incentive for the little ones.
Accommodation for couples and families
If you're travelling as a couple or with family, communal hostels are not always the best option. There are some excellent alternatives:
- Guesthouses and rural houses: Private rooms with bathroom, more peace and genuine rest.
- Boutique hotels: For those who want comfort and privacy without giving up the spirit of the Camino.
- Private hostels with private rooms: A middle-ground option that combines the pilgrim atmosphere with more privacy.

Luggage transfer: especially recommended for families
Walking with a full load on your back for 6 hours is not the same as walking free. With the luggage transfer service, your bags travel ahead to the next accommodation while you walk with just a small day pack. For couples with children, this makes the Camino far more enjoyable.
