One of the most frequent questions pilgrims ask before setting off is: how much money do I need to do the Camino de Santiago? The honest answer is that it depends a great deal on your travel style, the route and whether you organise everything yourself or with an agency. This guide breaks down all the real costs with data updated to 2026.

Quick summary Minimum budget (hostel + pilgrim menu): €35–45/day. Comfortable budget (guesthouse + restaurant): €70–90/day. Premium budget (hotel + all-inclusive): €110–140/day.

The three main spending categories

1. Accommodation

Accommodation is the most variable expense and the one where there is the greatest difference between types of pilgrim:

2. Food

On the Camino there is the pilgrim menu (menú del peregrino): starter, main course, dessert, bread and wine for €11–14. It is the most economical option and sufficient for most people. If you prefer to eat à la carte or in restaurants, add €20–40 more per day.

Is it more expensive with an agency?

This is the million-dollar question. The answer is: it depends on how you organise it yourself. On short, high-demand routes like the Camino from Sarria, booking ahead and comparing services carefully makes a big difference to the final budget.

If you are staying in public hostels and do not need luggage transfer, organising the Camino yourself is the cheapest option. But if you want a private guesthouse or hotel with confirmed bookings, the savings from doing it solo are minimal — and the time spent searching, comparing and booking each accommodation across 5–12 stages can be considerable. This is especially noticeable on the last 100 km from Sarria, where supply is broad but demand is also very high in mid and high season.

Our all-organised packages include selected accommodation, luggage transfer, pilgrim credential, detailed itinerary and 24-hour support. The price per person starts at €399 for the last 100 km from Sarria in a private hostel, or €649 for the Camino Portugués. Exactly what you would pay booking the same things on your own.

What people usually forget to budget for The unexpected. An extra night due to injury, a doctor's visit, an emergency taxi, replacing damaged gear… Always set aside an additional 15–20% on top of your estimated budget.
