One of the most frequent questions pilgrims ask before setting off is: how much money do I need to do the Camino de Santiago? The honest answer is that it depends a great deal on your travel style, the route and whether you organise everything yourself or with an agency. This guide breaks down all the real costs with data updated to 2026.
The three main spending categories
1. Accommodation
Accommodation is the most variable expense and the one where there is the greatest difference between types of pilgrim:
| Type | Price/night | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Public hostel (dormitory) | €8–14 | Bunk bed, shower, shared kitchen |
| Private hostel (dormitory) | €14–22 | Bunk bed, shower, sometimes breakfast |
| Guesthouse / private room | €35–65 | Single room, private bathroom |
| 2–3★ hotel | €60–100 | Double room, breakfast |
| 4★ boutique hotel | €100–180 | All-inclusive, spa, views |
2. Food
On the Camino there is the pilgrim menu (menú del peregrino): starter, main course, dessert, bread and wine for €11–14. It is the most economical option and sufficient for most people. If you prefer to eat à la carte or in restaurants, add €20–40 more per day.
| Option | Estimated cost/day |
|---|---|
| Breakfast (Camino café bar) | €3–5 |
| Pilgrim menu (lunch) | €11–14 |
| Simple dinner / supermarket | €8–12 |
| Snacks and drinks | €4–8 |
| Estimated total/day | €26–39 |
3. Transport
Transport to the starting point and from Santiago is a one-off expense but can be significant:
- Flight to Spain: €50–300 one way depending on origin and season
- Train/bus to the start: €15–80 (e.g. Madrid–Sarria by train: ~€40)
- Return from Santiago: similar to the outward journey
- Luggage transfer (if not included in your package): €6–12/stage
Total budget by pilgrim type
Here is the real breakdown for the Camino from Sarria (5–6 days) and the Camino Portugués (12 days):
Budget pilgrim
Public hostel, pilgrim menu, no extras. Camino from Sarria (6 nights): ~€240–300 on accommodation + food. Total including transport from Madrid: ~€400–500.
Standard pilgrim
Guesthouse or private room, mix of pilgrim menu and restaurant, some souvenirs. Camino from Sarria: ~€450–600 on accommodation + food. Total including transport: ~€700–900.
Premium pilgrim
3–4★ hotel, restaurants, luggage transfer, activities in Santiago. Camino from Sarria: ~€700–900 on accommodation + food. Total including transport: ~€1,000–1,300.
Is it more expensive with an agency?
This is the million-dollar question. The answer is: it depends on how you organise it yourself. On short, high-demand routes like the Camino from Sarria, booking ahead and comparing services carefully makes a big difference to the final budget.
If you are staying in public hostels and do not need luggage transfer, organising the Camino yourself is the cheapest option. But if you want a private guesthouse or hotel with confirmed bookings, the savings from doing it solo are minimal — and the time spent searching, comparing and booking each accommodation across 5–12 stages can be considerable. This is especially noticeable on the last 100 km from Sarria, where supply is broad but demand is also very high in mid and high season.
Our all-organised packages include selected accommodation, luggage transfer, pilgrim credential, detailed itinerary and 24-hour support. The price per person starts at €399 for the last 100 km from Sarria in a private hostel, or €649 for the Camino Portugués. Exactly what you would pay booking the same things on your own.
Optional expenses to factor in
- Official Compostela certificate: free (you only need your stamped credential)
- Pilgrim Mass at the Cathedral: free
- Cathedral Museum: €12
- Extra night in Santiago to celebrate: €60–120
- Trip to the Cíes Islands: €25–35 (ferry + entry)
- Souvenirs and mementos: variable (budget €30–60)
- Laundry on the route: €5–8/wash
